12 million € waste: Stop TUD parking garage!

The Tuuwi invites on Friday 14.07 to a demo against a planned parking garage on the campus of the TU Dresden – that would be 12 million € wasted tax money! Because it is not even needed! This shows the mobility concept of the TU Dresden. Instead, we need convenient, cheap and safe public transport, bike paths & co! 🚲

Spread the word and bring your friends to the demo: https://tuuwi.de/parkhaus
More info here: https://t.me/+23Ta-WEL17UzOTli

We look forward to seeing you in as large numbers as possible.

Starting point: Friday 14.07.2023
14:30 – > Nürnberger Platz!

What exactly is planned and why?

Saxony’s construction management company SIB plans to build a parking garage with 400 parking spaces on the TU campus for the new buildings. Dresden’s parking space statute requires that there be sufficient parking spaces for new buildings. But these are already available – the parking garage is superfluous.

A parking garage is a bad idea

The mobility concept of the TU Dresden shows that a parking garage is not needed: the TU parking spaces are more than sufficient. Forecasts show that the 400 newly planned parking spaces in the parking garage would hardly be used. If the parking garage were built, Dresden’s fresh air supply would be cut off from the southern slope and another area on the TU campus would be built up. Moreover, a parking garage is heading in completely the wrong direction: If the same money were invested in good public transportation instead of 400 parking spaces, more TU employees would benefit: for 12 million euros, DVB could transport thousands of additional passengers every day. Many TU members need above all more regular affordable rural public transport, because today many are dependent on the car.

What do we need to achieve?

Further planning for the parking garage must be stopped immediately! Instead, we need convenient and affordable public transport in Saxony, especially in the countryside! This must be affordable (job ticket, semester ticket). For this the rectorate must make itself strong.

The city of Dresden should revise its parking space statutes and traffic planning: in Dresden, too, we need good public transport and safe cycling infrastructure, instead of too many parking spaces and streets that are too wide according to outdated predictions.

Tutors wanted for the ESE 2023

As in previous years, we are looking for tutors for this year’s freshers’ orientation (ESE), which will take place from 02.10.2023 to 08.10.2023. In order to give the first-year students the best possible start to their university life at the faculty, we are dependent on your help. Your task as a tutor is to give the first-year students all the important information they need for their start at university, to guide them through the faculty building, to show them the most important places on campus and to explore the city with them.

Especially for the supervision of the English-language Master’s programmes Transportation Economics, Air Transport and Logistics, we are looking for tutors who offer supervision in English. We are also looking forward to foreign students who can take on this task. In the Bachelor’s programme in Transportation Economics as well as in the Master’s programme in Electrical Transportation Systems, we have had very few tutors in the past years, so it would be nice if the first-year students had tutors from the respective programme.

You can easily register via the following OPAL course: https://tud.link/n7lm. You can register individually for each event you want to supervise. Therefore, it is no problem if you do not have time for all ESE events. Only the supervision of a first-year group (including a tour of the faculty, a short explanation of the degree programme, etc.) on Thursday, 05.10.2023 is obligatory, as experience has shown that we need the most tutors there. We would also provide you with a short training session shortly before the ESE. Otherwise, we would be happy if you register for as many other events as possible.

If you have any questions or problems with enrolment, please feel free to contact us by email at fsrverkehr@tu-dresden.de.

Statement on the transfer of study regulations in traffic engineering

As many people are probably already aware, there are new study regulations for the diploma programme in traffic engineering. While students of the second semester already study in the new order and do not have to worry about anything, a transfer may make sense for students of the sixth and especially the fourth semester. The faculty has recently provided information about this on the following website:

While the new study regulations bring benefits for many students and the teaching offer has been improved through renewal and further development, some problems also arise, two of which are particularly relevant and serious for larger parts of the student body:

  • Problems with transfer due to late graded exams or/and assignments, which make transfer on 1 October or 1 April impossible.
  • Courses not offered in the old form for 4th semester students who do not want to transfer or for students of higher semesters who have to make up courses.

Because of these two problems, we have contacted the Dean and the Dean of Studies of Transport Engineering with a statement, which you can find linked below. In cooperation with all stakeholders, we are trying to ensure that as many students as possible do not suffer any disadvantages when transferring and will keep you updated here.

Teaching Award of the Faculty of Transport Sciences 2023: We are looking for your nominations!

Our faculty’s teaching award is going into a new round! After we awarded the prize for the first time last year and honoured Prof. Udo Becker and Dr. Stefan Frank, we would like to award two teachers again this year. The prize, endowed with 250 €, is to be awarded to one teacher each in undergraduate teaching (basic studies in transport engineering / Bachelor Transport Economics) and in postgraduate teaching (advanced studies in transport engineering / Master’s degree programmes). The teaching awards will be presented on Faculty Day, this year on 10 November.

Of course, you as students of the faculty should again be involved in the selection process. Until 16.07.2023, you have the opportunity to indicate in this survey the course and teacher to whom you would like to award the prize. Based on your nominations, the FSR will then make a preliminary selection, which will take into account not only the number of nominations but also your reasons and the size of the course. The final decision on the awarding of the teaching prize is made by the Faculty Council.

You can nominate all courses at our faculty that you have attended in the last two semesters.

We look forward to your numerous participation in the survey so that we can award the best teachers of our faculty!

Invitation to the summer party

It will soon be that time again: On 21.06.2023, we are organising our faculty’s summer party like last year. From 6 pm onwards, you can chat, celebrate and network with fellow students and faculty members on the POT-Wiese.

Food and drink will be provided. There will be delicious food from the grill, as well as various homemade salads, cakes and other snacks. There will also be cold drinks with and without alcohol (draught beer 2€, draught soda and lemonade 1,50€). Please bring your own plates and cutlery to avoid unnecessary waste (disposable tableware is available for an extra charge).

Our “Listige Vereinigungen” Spätverkehr, Euroavia and Verkehrte Welt will also be represented again with action stalls and offer you an extended range of drinks and games.

We look forward to your numerous coming and a nice evening with you!

Paddle boat regatta 2023

It’s summer again, and that means the obligatory paddle boat regatta is upon us! What could be better in the summer heat than a relaxed boat trip on the Elbe?

The participation fee is 12 euros and includes paddles and life jackets. Even though we call it a regatta, it is not a sporting event, fun is the main focus on the trip from Königstein to Obervogelgesang, always down the Elbe.

We will meet on Saturday, 08.07. at 09:15 at the main station under the glass dome. The tour will last until about 4pm, so remember to take something to drink with you.

Please register via OPAL by 20.06.2023. We look forward to seeing you!

Discussion round “car free campus”

Mommsenstraße will be free of cars and open to people for the week of 19-23 June. A model for the future, or even for the entire campus? The FSR Verkehr invites you to discuss this with other students and staff. The event will take place in the open on Tuesday 20.06. at 16:30 directly on Mommsenstraße, drinks can be purchased on site.

The event is part of the TUUWI Mitmachfest.

Next stop Dr. / PhD

A discussion evening on the topic of “Next Stop: Dr. / PhD” is to take place on 27.06.2023. The event will report on the career path of a doctorate at our faculty. The situations of three doctoral students currently working on their doctorates at the faculty will be presented in a realistic way. Language is English, questions in German are possible.

The event will consist of 15-minute presentations by the doctoral candidates on their research project and their general situation. In addition, there will be entertaining mini-games between the talks, which are intended to debunk or confirm myths surrounding a doctorate in a humorous way. Many memes are waiting for you!
Afterwards, there will be plenty of room for questions from the audience, which should lead to a lively discussion.

“Kompass Hauptstudium”

The Online-Link: https://bbb.tu-dresden.de/b/chr-r3p-moe-kh6

At the end of the fourth semester, every VIW student is faced with the choice of a major field of study. As every year, we do not leave the students of traffic engineering alone with this future-oriented decision, but offer a lot of information with “Kompass Hauptstudium” thanks to the active support of Spätverkehr and the faculty. Whether you are completely at a loss, have a certain preference for a field of study or have already made up your mind, we want to provide everyone with useful details about entering the main study programme.

This year Kompass Hauptstudium will take place on Monday, 05.06. in the 5th DS, on Tuesday 06.06. in the 5th DS and on 13.06. in the 6th DS in presence in the Drawing Room (POT/168).

This year, Kompass Hauptstudium consists of three events. Once again, there will be lectures by 8th semester students and graduates of the respective specialisation, as well as lectures by the heads of the specialisations. If they do not answer all your questions, you can post your questions in the forum and we will try to answer them satisfactorily.

In addition, there will be two information events organised by the faculty. The first, on Thursday 22 June in the 2nd DS in POT/168, will be about exchange and study opportunities abroad, while the second event will be about transferring to the new study regulations and will take place on Tuesday 27 June in the 6th DS in POT/168.
